Lemon vs Culinary Key: which food safety app is right for your UK food business?

Lemon has built a genuinely good product and a loyal following — around 900 UK kitchens, three years in, a clean mobile app and an honest flat price. If you've been comparing the two, this is a fair side-by-side: where Lemon is the better choice, where Culinary Key is, and the one question that usually decides it. We'll say up front where Lemon wins, because it does win in places, and a comparison that pretends otherwise isn't worth reading.

What is Lemon?

Lemon is a digital food safety diary for UK kitchens. It replaces the paper SFBB folder with a mobile app that records fridge, freezer and hot-hold temperatures, cook / cool / reheat logs, opening, closing and cleaning checklists, and delivery records — with tracked issues for anything out of range and one-tap PDF, Excel and CSV exports for the EHO. It's £19 per month per location, flat, with every feature and unlimited team members included, no contract, and a 14-day trial with no card.

It's deliberately tight in scope. There are no rotas, no inventory, no payroll — and, importantly for what follows, no allergen management, safe methods, pest control, FHRS history or monthly compliance reviews. Lemon's own description of itself is "the simplest app for food safety checks," and that focus is a real strength: for a kitchen that needs exactly those things, it's fast, cheap and does the job well.

What is Culinary Key?

Culinary Key is a food safety compliance platform built specifically for UK food businesses. It covers the same daily diary Lemon does — opening and closing checks, temperature logs, cleaning schedules, deliveries — but it's built around the full Safer Food Better Business framework, so it also carries the parts of compliance a diary leaves out: allergen management across all 14 UK-mandated allergens, HACCP safe methods, pest control records, FHRS inspection history, monthly SFBB compliance reviews, staff training and induction records, and a read-only Inspector Portal that lets an EHO or Primary Authority officer view your records directly.

It's £40 per month per location, dropping to £35 from five locations and £30 from ten. Like Lemon, every feature is included on every plan, there are no tiers, and there's no minimum contract.

The honest version of the price gap

There's no getting around it: Lemon is £19 and Culinary Key is £40. If price is the only axis, Lemon wins.

But the two aren't priced differently for the same product — they're different products. Lemon is £19 for a diary. Culinary Key is £40 for a compliance system that includes that diary and everything around it. The fairer way to read the £21 difference is to ask what it buys: allergen management, safe methods, pest control logs, FHRS history, monthly reviews and inspector access — roughly 70p a day for the parts of UK compliance a temperature app doesn't touch.

One thing worth crediting Lemon for, because it's rare in this market: its £19 is genuinely flat and all-inclusive. No "allergens unlock on the next tier," no custom checklists locked behind a higher plan. Culinary Key works the same way — one price, everything included. That shared honesty is worth noting, because several of the broader apps quote a low "from" price for an entry tier and put the features you'll actually use on a plan that costs considerably more. Neither Lemon nor Culinary Key does that. The difference between them isn't a pricing trick — it's simply how much is inside.

The question that usually decides it: allergens

This is the single clearest difference, and for most food businesses it's decisive.

Lemon has no allergen management. Culinary Key manages all 14 UK-mandated allergens as a core part of the product.

Under Natasha's Law, communicating allergen information accurately isn't optional — it's a legal obligation, and it's one of the first things an EHO will probe. An app without allergen tooling doesn't make you non-compliant on its own; you can still manage allergens on paper alongside it. But that's exactly the paper-and-goodwill problem a digital system is supposed to solve. If you serve food with allergens — which is almost every kitchen — a food safety app that doesn't help you manage them isn't a complete compliance tool. It's a very good diary sitting next to a compliance gap you're still filling by hand.

The shape of that table is the whole story. The top third is a near dead heat — Lemon genuinely holds its own on the daily diary, and on native mobile it's ahead. Below that line is everything a diary doesn't cover, and it's where the two products stop being comparable.

A word on mobile

Credit where it's due: Lemon ships proper native iOS and Android apps, and that's a real advantage for pure speed-of-logging at the line. Culinary Key runs as a mobile web app with an Android listing. For a business whose only need is tapping in temperatures as fast as possible, that difference matters, and it's fair to weigh it. For a business that needs the compliance surface underneath, it's a smaller factor than what the app actually does once you're in it.

Who is Lemon better for?

Genuinely: a single-site kitchen — a café, a food truck, a takeaway — that needs temperatures, checklists and delivery records, has straightforward allergen needs it's comfortable handling outside an app, wants the lowest honest price, and values a slick native mobile experience above breadth. For that operator, Lemon is a strong, fairly priced choice, and we'd say so.

Who is Culinary Key better for?

An independent or small multi-site food business — cafés, restaurants, bakeries, catering operations — that needs to be genuinely inspection-ready, not just diary-ready. If your compliance picture includes allergens (Natasha's Law), safe methods, pest control, FHRS history and the monthly reviews an EHO expects to see; if you'd rather manage all of it in one place than run a temperature app plus a paper folder for everything else; or if you want to hand an inspector direct read-only access rather than emailing a PDF — that's the business Culinary Key is built for.

Site count isn't really the dividing line; compliance complexity is. A single-site bakery with real allergen obligations is more of a Culinary Key business than a three-site coffee chain that only logs temperatures.

Conclusion

Lemon is a well-made product doing one job well, at an honest price, and for the right kitchen it's the right answer. Culinary Key is built for the kitchen whose compliance doesn't end at the temperature log — where allergens, safe methods, inspection history and monthly reviews are all part of the picture, and having them in one inspection-ready system is worth more than the difference in monthly cost. Pick the diary if a diary is what your inspection needs. Pick the compliance system if it isn't.
